the reason I have not achieved the success I want
and how I plan to overcome it
I have not written an article in months. That’s a lie. The truth is that I have not finished one. And the reason is no other than “shiny object syndrome” (SOS).
There are many reasons, I believe, why one would experience SOS. As for me, it’s the inability to choose what I could do as a child that led me to this experience.
The reason behind my experience with SOS (I think)
I grew in an Asian household in which my life was planned for me up until I graduated from college. And since I could not choose what to do with my life, I did not think about what I wanted to do, at all.
As an adult, I want to try anything and everything. And as soon as I dip my toes in one topic, the ones on the other foot want to try something else.
So how can I overcome this?
By keeping it simple. As a perfectionist, I tend to overthink everything I do. And since I set out such big goals, which entails a lengthy process with detailed plans, I often run into my worst enemy — procrastination.
So to overcome SOS and actually stick to a habit/plan/goal, I plan on simplifying everything, and I do mean everything, I do. If I stick to this, the barrier to accomplishing something gets smaller, and the other shiny opportunities/objects become less attractive.
